Lone Star Card House Poker Room Review

It has been a while since I played Poker outside of a few home games. I was driving home from work a few weeks ago and heard an interview on the Radio with a local poker club that was about to open in Clear Lake. I looked into it a little but had not made up my mind if I wanted to drive that far to check it out. I was talking about it at a home game and one of the players said there was one opening in Conroe. He gave me the website and FB page and I started looking into that one. I mentioned it to a few of my friends and 2 of them went with me to check it out last weekend. The website says they Charge a Membership fee ($10 per day) and an hourly seat rental charge ($9 an Hour) but since they just opened they are doing a $25 daily membership fee and no seat rental fee. I also got a free day for bringing 2 new players. I ended up playing the $100 tourney (10 Players) and some $1/2 NL cash game (7 Players). I also played last night the Tourney drew 20 players. Based on my 2 sessions below is my review and ratings on the room thus far….

Number Of Tables and amenities: green_lrg-10green_lrg-10green_lrg-10green_lrg-10white_lrg-07
There are 5 tables and room to expand to 10 from the looks of the space. Chairs are comfy and chips and tables are nice, clean and new (as to be expected from a new room) Tournament chips are very nice clay chips. Only has 1 unisex bathroom that may be an issue when they get bigger. They do serve free chips, soft drinks coffee and water but no food or alcohol.

Game Spreads And Limits: green_lrg-10green_lrg-10green_lrg-10green_lrg-10white_lrg-07
They have no-limit holdem at $1-$2 Buy ins $50 – $300. You can straddle under the gun for $4 and double and triple straddle. Games currently run Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Tournaments: green_lrg-10green_lrg-10green_lrg-10white_lrg-07white_lrg-07
I think the buy in amounts are good for the area and the start times are good as well. The payout is top heavy and with no rake the pot is very large.LSCH Blinds

Thursday 8pm $50

Saturday 4pm $50

Saturday 7pm $100

I am kind of a tournament structure nit (not as much as Chainsaw) but I do think structure is important. That being said this structure is terrible. You start with 15k in chips if you get the 5k bonus chip. But the blinds start at 100/200 and the 1st level is 20 minutes . This is where it gets strange (see chart above) the next level is 200/400 and 19 minutes then 400/800 and 18 minutes. They then color up the 100’s. Then they go to 500/1000 and 17min then do another color up of the 500’s. Then the next level is 1k/2k 16 min, ect. I prefer a consistent 20 or 15 minute levels and smaller jumps. I would suggest adding at least a 300/600 level.

How Good Are The Players: green_lrg-10green_lrg-10green_lrg-10green_lrg-10white_lrg-07
Players seemed to range from beginner to average. Sure, there are some good players, but for the most part, this is a very weak room with a lot of callers to see the flop and some who will hang on with Ace high.

Dealers: green_lrg-10green_lrg-10green_lrg-10white_lrg-07white_lrg-07
Out of my 2 visits I had 3 different dealers and I rated them as a whole. Some issues I had can be fixed with training but there were many basic errors. This is a problem I see with a non tipping set up, there is no motivation to deal a lot of hands and get better to increase tips.

Management: green_lrg-10green_lrg-10green_lrg-10white_lrg-07white_lrg-07
The game runners and management seemed nice and would listen to player recommendations. They also seemed like they were trustworthy and were trying to follow all the rules as grey as they may be but that is a discussion for another time.

Overall Rating: green_lrg-10green_lrg-10green_lrg-10white_lrg-07white_lrg-07
Overall this is a new room and it will take some time to build a player base. I think they have the foundation they just need to work on a few items and this could be the best room in Houston. I hope so as they are 30 minutes from me and I hope this Poker Club model takes off in Texas.

Pre game poker…

We had 14 players for the Super Bowl eve poker tournament. Chavo went all out clearing out his garage and turning it into a poker room. He also rented a margarita machine and players chipped in for the food and drinks. The action started out fast as we had a rebuy at table one on the first hand! It settled down a bit but when we got to the break, we had 15 rebuys and 13 add-ons making the prize pool $840. After the break we quickly got down to 12 but were stuck at 2 tables for a while until 2 players went out on the same hand.

At the final table, we were all pretty even until boss went on a run and moved all in 3 hands in a row. the next hand with blinds 500/1000 Chavo raised to 3k boss went all in for 20k on the button Chavo called for less with KQ ,thinking Boss was full of it, but he had a real hand AK and Chavo was out. A few hands later on a board of 345 Ortego bet out flounder re-raised Ortego re-raised flounder went all in and Ortego snap called. Flounder showed A2 for the flopped wheel but Ortego had 67 for the flopped nut straight and flounder was crippled. A few hands later flounder was out and then we were down to 4 and at the money bubble. Morgan was the short stack but he would not go away at one point he was down to 2500 with blinds of 1000/2000 and he tripled up. Four handed lasted a few levels until Vinnie moved in on the button with 99 and was called by Ortegos 55 the 9s held up and Ortego was out on the bubble.

Three handed went a little faster as Morgan was still short and made a min raise all in from the sb with 33 and Vinnie called from the bb with 6h9h. The flop was Ks3cTh for a flopped set but Vinnie said all I need is runner runner hearts. The dealer (Britney) obliged by turning Qh Jh for the rivered flush and we were down to heads up. With almost even stacks and players ready to play cash Boss and Vinnie chopped the money.

We started a full cash game of $1/$1 no limit. Chavo started off winning every other hand and was up from $25 to $125 in a flash. But like Farve he could not finish as he ran into flounder who beat him in 2 huge pots. The 1st was a board of QQ3 Chavo had Q6 and flounder out kicked him with Q9 and a few hands later Chavo and flounder got into a pre flop raising war and firing back and forth and when the dust cleared they were both all in and Chavo’s QQ was dominated by Flounder’s KK. Chavo was busto and contemplated retirement from poker while crying in the Viking room.

Chavos Tourney Recap

Primo came in from SA and he played while I worked Friday night. He ended upo coming in 4th and winning a little money. We left Houston at around 1am and headed towards Beaumont with some money in our pockets…

The tournament was set up and ready to go at 5pm and we actually got started at around 5:45pm. We had 12 players (2 tables of 6) and we decided to have a set dealer but have the big blind shuffle a 2nd deck to keep the game moving. We also implemented a new rebuy rule where you could rebuy as soon as long as you were below the starting stack. (used to be you had to be broke)

The action was fast from the get go at my table and we had  2 rebuys in the 1st 5 minutes. it setled down for a while then we had a hand where 3 players were all in andthe hands were AA 78 and AJ on a A3868 board and we had 2 more rebuys. after that we got within 2 minutes of the break and 1 player decided to move in blind till the break. he was called by Boss with a short stack and boss doubled up. At the break everyone added on and the all together we had 8 rebuys and 12 add ons.

after the break we quickly lost 2 at the 2nd table and were down to the final table. At the final table the short stacks started to move Jason moved in a few times and had no callers and was slowly staying alive. Boss was the 1st casualty when he made a move with a flush draw and ran into Tammys middle pair. 2 short stacks were eliminated in race situations and then Primo Doubled up another short stack when he lost a race on the river.

Primo and Charles saw a flop and on a board of Ts2d6dAd charles moved all in with a set of dueces and Primo called with the 2nd nut flush…But the board paired on the river and Primo was out in 7th and Charles was a monster chip leader…IMG00181

Boss and Primo got the side game going as the rest of us played on. Chavo strated to push as he got short but didn’t get any action until his  TT ran into Morgans QQ.  Jason tried to make a move with T8 but ran into a hand was out and we were down to 4 .

Charles had about 60K and Morgan, Tammy and I had 20K.  i started to pick up some hands and I doubled up with my AK vs Charles QT when the flop came down Q66 i thought I was done but the turn gave me the A and the pot.

Charles and Tammy got into a huge hand and Charles was crippled to less then a BB and was eliminated the next hand. down to 3 Moorgan pushed all in from the SB with AJ and I called in the BB with AK and Morgan was out in 3rd.

Tammy and I played heads up for about 30 minutes moving chips back and forth. I had a chip lead and she pushed for 3BB with 55 and I called with K7 and it was a race. I hit my 7 on the flop to win the hand and the tournament.

This was the 1st  time I had won this tournament (chopped 1st once and I have a 3rd)

I then headed over to the $1/$1 cash game where I watched Primo give money to Chavo and Boss. Jason won a bit earlier but he was cashing out when I sat down. we played cash till about 4am and I ended up 1 little but Chavo and Boss were big winners up $100+ each.

Vegas Trip Report Mar28-31

I went to Vegas last weekend with my fiance to plan our wedding. I knew i wouldnt be playing a lot but I did get in a tourney and 2 cash sessions. We arrived at Treasure Island on Sat the 28th and we were just in time to check out the Dream Team poker tourney at Caesars. I was interested in seeing this event as it may be the next thing in poker and there was a lot of pros and celebrities there to watch play.

dream team poker

I did see a lot of pros and celebrities including Jaime Gold, TJ Cloutier, Jerry Yang, Dennis Phillips, Tiffany Micheal, Shannon Elizabeth, Phil Hellmuth, Mike Mattasouw, Jerry Buss, Mark Seif, Jeff Madsen, Teddy “Iceman” Monroe, and more…

We watched that for a while but then went to the sports book to drink and watch the end of the UCONN game. Then we went to see Love at the Mirage.

Sunday my fiance decided to go to the spa and i was going to play in a tourney. I was going to make the treck from TI to Caesars but decided to play in the TI tourney since it had a shorter structure and was thinking a softer game as well.

It had 37 players and was going to pay the top 3. I got off to a good start picking up a few big hands but not getting any action. we made it to the final 2 tables and i had the chip average. the blinds made a big jump from 300/600 to 500/1000 and I knew i needed to make a run. Thw player to my left had come over with a monster stack but he didnt seem like he knew what he was doing. I saw him call off alot of those chips in bad spots. i am the BB and he(UTG) limps in for 1K and is called by the button and the SB I look down at AQs and I ship in my last 4k UTG calls everyone else folds. He shows KTo but he gets there when the flop is KKQ and i am drawing slim and dead when a blank rolls off on the turn.
img00145
I decide to play some 1/3 NL as they are opening a new game. I buy in for $120 and 4 hands I get KK on the button and I open raise to $12 sb folds and BB makes it $24 I reraise to $50 and he ships for $100 and I call. he of course has AA and i lose my 1st buy in. I rebuy and about 10 hands later I get 78s on the button and limp behind a mp limper. flop is 3h5d6s BB bets $10 and I call. Turn is a 9d giving me the nuts. BB checks I bet $30 and he calls. River is Jd and BB checks i bet $50 and he calls with Td4d for a flush. I decide to buy in one more time I reraise with AQ to $12 and get reraised by a $40 short stack in the BB so I call the extra 28 and he shows KK and wins. I decide I am running bad and cash out to play another day. I hit Margaritaville to drown my sorrows.

I don’t play again until Monday night at around midnight and when I buy in to a 8 handed game 2 players cash out so I am at a 6 handed game now. I get a QQ on the button and raise to $12 and get called by the BB. Flop is 775 2 hearts Bb leads for $20 and I call. Turn is Th and he ships for $60 i think for a whille and call. River is a 7 he shows JJ and I finally win a pot. I pick on a short stack at the table and play a little looser to get from $120 to around $320. Then 4 dealers roll in and a local named LasVegas Micheal.
ti poker
I get in a pot where i flop top 2 and lose to a turned set. then I get KK slow play and get beat by a flush. I am down to $120. I limp on the Button with 6h8h the flop comes JhTh7s. UTG checks MP bets $20 I call with my flush and straight draw. UTG check raises to $120 MP is all in for $100 I decide I have outs and call getting 3-1. Turn is a heart and i beat his flopped straight. the very next hand it is folded to me in the CO with 5c6c and i raise to $10 BB calls. flop is 8d5d6d BB chcks I bet $20 he calls turn is Qs he checks I bet $40 he ships another $100 all in I call river is a 6 giving me a boat and beating his flopped flush. that broke the game and i decide to call it a night up $350 for the session all coming on the last 2 hands of the night and my trip.

saw a few Shows, checked out some wedding venues, ate some good food, went downtown, saw a big live tourney , played some poker and won some money…Not a bad trip

East Texas Poker 3

Played another Tourney at Chavos house last Saturday. This time the turnout was only 13 players which included The 4 in our car ( My roommate, His Girl, Primo from SA and myself). The game had the same structure as last time($20 for 10K and unlimited rebuys @ $20for 10K)  but I upped the Add on from 10K to 15K  for the same $20.

The game was extremely tight early and we only had 3 rebuys and we had 2 people bust and not rebuy before the break. At the break we had all 11 players add on so I guess that marketing worked out. The play was still tight after the break and it took us over an hour to get down to the final table of 10.  (With Chavo going out in 11th) The final table went slow at 1st then we had people dropping like flies till we were 4 handed. It was Boss, My roommate, Primo and Myself. I had the 2nd shortest stack but I stole a lot of blinds to stay at a playable 5bb stack. But I would get caught stealing as Primo limped from the SB and I pushe d with 9s5c from the BB and he called with AJ oops. I bubble out followed by my roommate and the last 2 chop.

We get a .25/.50 NL cash game going which is rare for theses tourneys. We all bought in for around $20 and had about 7 players. After a while I was down to $6 after a few small pots and having to lay down the 2nd nuts to primos push with the nuts. I get AK and tripled up a few hands later and I have a playable stack again. We play down to 3 players when Chavo cashes out up about $60 and Primo and I decide to play Heads up.

He is Drunk and Tired and kind of annoying talking shit about his many wins when we were in college and all that. I take about $20 off him heads up before he quits. I could have gotten his whole stack if we played longer but I will leave him with some gas money. I doubt he will log that as a loss since he was up from the other players from earlier.

All in all it was a fun night even though I dont like the outcome I think I played well in the tourney but was forced to shove when my stack was super short on the bubble.  Oh well that is tournament poker.

East Coast Trip Report

I went home to Connecticut for the holidays with a quick stopoff at Atlantic city with my Mom and my Fianace. They dont play poker but I got in a few $65 tourneys at Showboat and the Taj. I dont have much to write as I was card dead and went out a few hours in all tourneys. I finished 40/90 25/50 and 25/55  going out AIPF with my AQ vs AA, My KK vs 99 and my JJ vs A9. Had a small losing session at $1/$2  at Showboat before breakfast then went to Borgotta and made it back plus a buy in before dinner.

Drove back to CT that night and celibrated Christmas with my family. The next day I took my Grandparents to Mohegan Sun. I playued $1/2 for about an hour lost half my stack and decided to play some $4/$8 Omah H/L but the game was 4 handed and real tight so I lost about $50 and decided to play a SNG. I got it down to 4 handed and then shipped it with JJ vs Ah3h and he rivered a flush. I decided to find my grandparents and call it a night.

The Last night I was in town (News Year Eve) I went to Foxwoods to grind out some $1/$2. I went busto on top 2 vs a flopped flush and I had to rebuy. I ran my rebuy up and cashed out up $150 for the night.

All and all I was down about $300 for the trip not the best turnout but I played a lot of cards at a lot of casinos.

Hurricane Poker

Last night I wnet to a home game near my girlfriends house. I wasn’t sure if I was going to go because there is a big Huricane headed towards Houston. Hurricane IKE is set to hit on Sat so i wasn’t even sure the guy would host a game. I called him up to make sure he hadn’t canceled and I headed to the game. I was running a little late because I was helping my girlfriend prepare/move stuff inside for the hurricane.

Hurricane IKE

Hurricane IKE

I get there at around 8pm and they haven’t started yet so I guess I am not late. Another late player soon arricves and we start playing. The game is .50/$1 and this  group is weak tight so i decide to buy in for $80. I pick up some chips early and am at around $100 after a few hands. I am bluffing more often just because they underbet the pot and fold to aggression. About an hour in I get QQ in MP and make it $3 i get 3 callers including the BB. The flop is 7h6h2d and the BB bets $4 into the $10 pot I make it $16 and she moves all in for another $40. i have a read on her that she is a LAG who playes a wide range of hands. I think i have the best hand and must be fading a flush draw especially since I have 2 black Queens. I call and she shows 7sTc and I feel much better the turn is a Q and she is drawing dead.

I win and lose a few medium pots and then i get involved in a big hand. a new player raises to $6 UTG the player to my right calls and I call with 99. the flop is Jc9s8s UTG bets out $6 other player min raises to $12 i cold call the $12 (I should have raised to $50 looking back.) and UTG calls. The turn is a T and both players check so I check. the river is a 3 and the MP bets $5 so i call. He shows 88 for a flopped set and I show my higher set.

I cash out $175 at 11:30pm when everyone breaks to eat. I had anouncced at 10pm that I would leave at around 11pm but still someone gave me a hard time for cashing out. When I was invited to play I said I was not given a set end time but I do understand at a home game you shouldnt hit and run. But I was there almost 4 hours and it was close to midnight and they had a full game. Players had arrived late and a player took a break to go somewhare and was coming back at around 11:30. Anyways I stayed till 2am the last time I played and left up both times. I gave notice this time and stayed pretty late. I guess next time I get invited i will ask the rule before I come.
